About
My name is Nathanael, and Burl & Brew is the natural intersection of two passions that have shaped my life for years: the art of coffee roasting and the craft of woodworking. Both disciplines reward patience, precision, and a deep respect for raw materials—and both have taught me that the most meaningful things are made slowly, intentionally, and by hand.
I began roasting coffee long before Burl & Brew existed, driven by nothing more than curiosity and a desire to create something better than what I could find on a store shelf. What started as a personal ritual—experimenting with beans, adjusting roast curves, learning how subtle changes transform flavor—quickly became a quiet obsession. Over time, I realized that roasting wasn’t just a hobby. It was a craft I wanted to share.
Today, every bag of Burl & Brew coffee is roasted in micro‑batches of just half a pound at a time. That scale isn’t a limitation; it’s a choice. Small batches allow me to give each roast the attention it deserves, ensuring consistency, freshness, and a flavor profile that honors the bean’s origin. I roast exclusively on an air roaster, a method that brings out clarity, sweetness, and nuance—perfect for showcasing the unique character of each coffee.
Just as no two pieces of wood are alike, no two coffees are either. I hand‑select every bean I roast, choosing origins that speak to me and pairing them with roast levels that highlight their natural strengths. Some coffees shine brightest with a lighter, more delicate touch; others come alive with the deeper caramelization of a medium or full‑city roast. My goal is always the same: to respect the bean, reveal its story, and deliver a cup that feels crafted rather than manufactured.
The woodworking side of Burl & Brew is woven into the brand because it reflects the same values that guide my roasting—care, craftsmanship, and a love for natural materials. Woodworking taught me to slow down, to appreciate grain patterns and imperfections, and to understand that the maker’s hand is what gives an object soul. That philosophy carries into every roast I produce. Coffee, like wood, rewards intention.
Burl & Brew exists because I believe great coffee should feel personal. It should feel like something made by someone who genuinely cares—someone who knows the difference between “good enough” and “just right.” Whether you’re here for a bold morning cup, a bright and fruity pour‑over, or a roast that reminds you why small‑batch matters, I’m honored to share my craft with you.
Thank you for being part of this journey. I hope each bag you open brings the same warmth, comfort, and inspiration that roasting brings to me.
